SWT to Host Southwest Symposium

SAN MARCOS,TEXAS — Southwest Texas State University was chosen to host the 25th Southwest Symposium Nov. 1-2, 2002. The Symposium is the annual conference held by the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication that allows journalism and mass communication educators to present research.

The events will be held in Old Main on the SWT campus.

The Symposium is expected to draw around 100 professors and graduate students from 43 schools in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Colorado and Arkansas.

Founded nearly 30 years ago, the Southwest Council, a regional affiliate of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, was established as an expansion of a Texas association of journalism educators interested in promoting scholarship and improving ties to mass communication industries. It is the only AEJMC regional affiliate to produce its own publication, the Southwest Mass Communication Journal.

The 2002 Southwest Symposium will also mark the end of Fred Blevins’ term as the organization’s president. Blevins, an SWT mass communications professor, is on leave this year to serve as the associate dean at the Gaylord School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Oklahoma.
