Trauth named president of SWT
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Denise M. Trauth has been named the next president of Southwest Texas State University.
| Trauth, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, was announced as the ninth president of SWT following a special meeting on the San Marcos campus of the Texas State University System Board of Regents. Trauth, 55, had been recommended to the Board of Regents by a Presidential Selection Advisory Committee composed of representatives of the SWT faculty, staff, student body, deans, chairs, alumni, the San Marcos community and four members of the Board of Regents. Board Chairman Dionicio “Don” Flores said, “The board is convinced that Dr. Trauth has the vision, experience and leadership qualities to help Southwest Texas State University build upon its stature as one of America’s leading comprehensive regional universities.” Flores also expressed the board’s appreciation to the Selection Committee and to the people of the city of San Marcos and Hays County for their support of SWT through the years and in the future. |

Trauth served previously as the dean of the Graduate School at UNCC. Her career includes 10 years in various capacities from assistant professor of speech communication to associate dean of the Graduate College at Bowling Green State University and several years previous to that at the University of Tulsa. Trauth received her B.A. in English literature from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Ohio, her M.A. in journalism from Ohio State University and her Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Iowa. Her husband, John, is a retired professor, and they have two adult daughters.
The Board of Regents was unanimous in its selection of Trauth to succeed Jerome H. Supple, who is retiring after 13 years as president of SWT.
Other members of the TSUS Board of Regents are Vice Chairman John Hageman of Austin, Kent Adams of Beaumont, Alan Dreeben of San Antonio, Patricia Diaz Dennis of San Antonio, James Hayley of Texas City, Nancy Neal of Lubbock, Pollyanna Stephens of San Angelo and James Sweatt of Dallas. The chancellor of the university system is Lamar Urbanovsky.
Other member institutions of the system are Angelo State University, Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College-Orange, Lamar State College-Port Arthur, Sam Houston State University, Sul Ross State University and Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College.
