Karl Rove to deliver Grosvenor Lecture at SWT

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Karl Rove, senior advisor to President George W. Bush, will deliver a free public lecture at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the Alkek Library Teaching Theatre at Southwest Texas State University.

Rove’s lecture is the fifth annual Gilbert Grosvenor Lecture, sponsored by the Gilbert M. Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education in the SWT Department of Geography.

Rove oversees the strategic planning, political affairs, public liaison and intergovernmental affairs of the White House. He previously served as chief strategist for the Bush for President Campaign and, for 18 years, president of Karl Rove & Co., an Austin-based public affairs firm that worked for Republican candidates, non-partisan causes and non-profit groups. His clients have included more than 75 Republican U.S. Senate, Congressional and gubernatorial candidates in 24 states, as well as the Moderate Party of Sweden.

The Colorado native attended the University of Utah, the University of Texas at Austin and George Mason University. He has taught at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and in the Journalism Department at UT-Austin and was also a faculty member at the Salzburg Seminar.

He was a member of the Board of International Broadcasting, which oversaw operations of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, and served on the board of the McDonald Observatory before entering government.

SWT’s Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education was established to provide leadership in the movement to increase the quality of geographic education in America’s schools. It is named for the chairman of the board of the National Geographic Society.

The Grosvenor Lecture is an annual event featuring a prominent geographer or public figure to whom geographic education has great meaning. Previous lecturers in the series have included Grosvenor, former Secretary of State James Baker and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
