Blevens chosen president of Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication

SWT well represented at group’s symposium

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Fred Blevens, associate professor of mass communication, has become president of the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication, an eight-state, 44- school regional affiliate of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The group’s mission is to promote research, service and teaching in journalism and mass communication and to build or fortify relations between academic organizations and mass communication industries.

At the group’s annual Southwest Symposium in Tulsa in November, Blevens also presented a refereed paper titled, “Guardians and Technocrats: A Collective Biography of the Commission on Freedom of the Press.”

Blevens will be kept busy. In addition to his recent appointment, he was elected to the board of the American Journalism Historians Association at the group’s national meeting in San Diego in October.

At Southwest Education Council meeting, David Cohen, an undergraduate print journalism major, presented a refereed paper titled, “Revisiting the Intifada: How Four Major Newspapers Covered the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in 2000.” Cohen was the only undergraduate to have his research accepted for presentation at the conference.

Paula Renfro, an associate professor of mass communication, presented a refereed paper titled, “Native American Jouralists Association: Building Bridges Between Nations.”
