‘Small Deaths’ on exhibit at Wittliff Gallery

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Small Deaths, a collection of photographs by Kate Breakey, will be on display from Oct. 28 through February at the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography on the Southwest Texas State University campus.

The collection features 62 hand-colored, oversized images of the remains of birds, flowers, lizards and insects, which Breakey has preserved and memorialized through her photography.

“I wish to give these creatures dignity, and I hope their images, much ‘larger than life,’ give them a power and a presence they never had,” Breakey said.

In the photographs she has tried to “freeze each creature in time, suspend it in space, immortalize it, so that its beauty and its death are memorialized.”

The Small Deaths exhibit is based on a book of the same title, which is the fifth publication in the Wittliff Gallery Series, published by the University of Texas Press and coming out this month. The book will be available at most major bookstores and through the University of Texas Press in Austin.

Kate Breakey is originally from South Australia and currently lives and works in Tucson, Ariz.

The Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography is located on the top floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library at SWT. The exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on Tuesdays, when it will be open until 9 p.m. The weekend office hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 2-6 p.m. on Sunday.
