Stephens wins SWT Sallie Beretta Award
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Lafy Stephens of Bay City has been named the recipient of the 2001 Sallie Beretta Outstanding Senior Woman Award at Southwest Texas State University.
Stephens will receive a bachelor’s degree with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry at SWT’s 9:30 a.m. commencement ceremony on May 12.
Stephens, a Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Scholar, is a member of the SWT Rodeo Association and Team, Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta National Academic Honor Society. She was selected to be among the 2001 Who’s Who Among American College Students.
Other organizations she was involved with at SWT include the SWT Rotaract Club, SWT Medical Explorers, and the AWARE Therapeutic Riding Center.
The Beretta Award is named for Sallie Beretta, who served on the University’s Board of Regents from 1933 to 1951. The award has been given by the university since 1963 to an outstanding senior woman based on leadership, scholarship, character, potential and loyalty.
