SWT hosts Trio Bowl 2001

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Students from several Central and South Texas high schools will participate in Trio Bowl 2001 in observance of National Trio programs Saturday, Feb. 24. Approximately 120 students will compete in academic and athletic competitions, including impromptu speaking, ready writing, science, math, spelling, quiz bowl and volleyball.

Trio Programs have assisted millions of Americans from low-income families - where neither parent graduated from college - in their pursuit of a postsecondary education. For more than 30 years, these programs have enabled Americans to successfully enter college and graduate. The programs include Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Veterans Upward Bound, Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Centers and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program.

Southwest Texas State University hosts four Trio programs: two Talent Search programs, Upward Bound and Student Support Services. The Talent Search and Upward Bound programs serve more than 1,700 students in Hays, Caldwell, Guadalupe and Travis counties. The SWT Student Support Services program serves 200 eligible SWT students, providing tutorial services, counseling and remedial instruction.

Among other services offered to Trio participants are assistance in choosing a college, workplace and college visits, tutoring, special instruction in reading, writing, study skills and mathematics, assistance in applying for financial aid, academic assistance in high school or assistance to re-enter high school.

This year, students from San Antonio, Austin, Manor, Luling, Lockhart, Seguin, Kyle, Buda and San Marcos will participate. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sigma Delta Lambda, Omega Delta Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma of SWT will co-sponsor this year’s event.
