Speech takes center stage during Communication Week

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — While typically a joint collaboration between the Mass Communication and Speech Communication departments of Southwest Texas State University, this year’s Communication Week will focus solely on speech communication, with a single-day event later in March for mass communication.

From Feb. 26 through March 2, speakers from around the country will come to SWT to discuss everything from careers obtained with speech degrees to political rhetoric and forms of nonverbal communication.

In addition to SWT professors and distinguished professors from West Virginia University, James McCroskey and Virginia Richmond, SWT will host John Sharp, former railroad commissioner and comptroller for the State of Texas and now an adjunct faculty member at SWT. Sharp will lecture on Political Communication and Political Campaigns from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27 in Evans Liberal Arts Building, room 225. Political communication campaign consultant and senior partner with MGT America, Greg Hartman, will co-host the lecture.

Ron Alves, attorney and director of oversight for the Texas Department of Workers Compensation, will discuss Nonverbal Communication and Legal Persuasion from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 in Centennial Hall, room 103.

Students looking for a clearer definition of their career goals can attend It’s Not What You Think! Translating Coursework into Career Direction given by Heather Hardeman, human resources generalist from Janus in Austin, and Maria Keys, human resources operations manager from Motorola in Austin. This lecture will be held 2-3:15 p.m., Thursday, March 1 in Centennial Hall, room 102.
