Armbrister to keynote water resources seminar

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Will Texas have sufficient water resources to serve a growing population in the next millennium?

That question will be examined by State Sen. Ken Armbrister as he delivers the 2000 Ed Cape Water Resources Seminar March 29 at Southwest Texas State University.

Armbrister’s speech, Texas Water at the Millennial Crossroads, will take place at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, at the University Performing Arts and Conference Center (UPACC) on the SWT campus. The speech will be preceded by a reception beginning at 9:45 a.m., also at UPACC.

The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Armbrister is the incoming vice chairman of the Texas Senate’s Natural Resources Committee. He will lead a comprehensive study of the state’s groundwater resources, focusing on conservation. The committee will examine a regional approach to groundwater management, inventory the availability of groundwater and consider the future regulations of groundwater and the role of groundwater districts.

Armbrister is currently chairman of the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice. The District 18 senator has served in the Texas Senate since 1986, after serving two terms in the Texas House of Representatives.

The Ed Cape Water Resources Seminar is sponsored annually by the Aquatic Biology Program of the SWT Department of Biology. Cape was an attorney, banker and rancher in San Marcos who served as the second general manager of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority from 1938 until 1960. He was instrumental in the effort to build Canyon Dam to help control flooding along the Guadalupe River.
