Latinas unite as women of culture and power SWT hosts 5th Annual Images of Women Conference
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Southwest Texas State University is set to bridge both a gender and cultural gap in fostering communication among students, professionals and the community with the 5th Annual Images of Women Conference.
The conference, designed and hosted by SWT Latina students, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the LBJ Student Center on the SWT campus.
In association with this year’s theme, "Afirmacion y Poder," (Empowerment and Affirmation), speakers will discuss the political, economic and cultural needs of Latinas across the United States.
This year’s keynote speakers include musician, Tish Hinojosa, who will be will be performing traditional cantos (mexican folk songs), and feminist author and educator, Dr. Maria Herrera-Sobek. Other presenters include, Dr. Kate Pierce, who will discuss women and minorities in the media; Dr. Ana Juarez, discussing gender and sexuality; Stella Silva, talking about Chicanas in higher education and Dr. Leticia Garza-Falcon, who will present a Latina Legends segment, as part of the luncheon. Her segment is dedicated to Eva Camunez-Tucker, Lydia Mendoza and Emma Tenayuca -- (Posthumous). Additional presenters will discuss topics relevant to today’s Latina woman.
A registration fee of $20.00 for students and $40.00 for non-students/professionals includes entry into all presentations and a continental breakfast and lunch. The deadline for pre-registration is March 3. For more information, please call 512-754-1625.
