Gorman named to distinguished professorship at SWT
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Robert Gorman, professor of political science at Southwest Texas State University, has been named the second holder of the school’s Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities.
Gorman succeeds Paul Cohen, professor of English, who was the first holder of the professorship. Faculty are chosen for the post on a three-year rotating basis. The endowment creates a salary supplement for the chosen professor and provides funds to enrich the teaching of courses in the humanities.
During his three-year tenure in the post, Gorman said he plans to conduct faculty gatherings to discuss the world’s great books, the ideas they contain and the way they are taught to undergraduate students in a variety of academic disciplines. He also plans to teach a two-course Honors Program sequence on the history of ethics and work toward the creation of a humanities minor in the SWT College of Liberal Arts.
Gorman joined the SWT faculty in 1979.
The professorship is funded through an endowment created in 1990 by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The NEH contributed $100,000 toward the endowment and SWT mounted a successful drive to raise another $300,000 in private contributions for the program.
