Breakfast Lions Club donates more than $80,000 to SWT

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — The San Marcos Breakfast Lions Club presented a donation of $80,000 to the Southwest Texas State University on Wednesday, July 14 at the university. Gerald Hill, vice president of university advancement at Southwest Texas, accepted the donation on behalf of SWT. The donation will be used for various activities administered by the Development Foundation, as well as scholarships for local high school seniors.

Money made from interest accrued on the contribution will be set aside in $1,000 increments to be given to graduating San Marcos High School seniors to attend Southwest Texas beginning in the fall of 2000. Remaining gain on interest will be kept in an account to sustain the scholarship, according to Isabel Aldape Jr., president of the Breakfast Lions Club.

Aldape explained that after 20 years as a community organization in San Marcos, the Breakfast Lions Club is disbanding; therefore, money raised from the River Taxi service the club provided is being distributed back to the community. Although SWT received an initial $80,000, more than $10,000 will be given to the university within the next few weeks as the organization finalizes its financial holdings.

Aldape summed up the organization’s feelings about the donation saying, “We felt good about it.”

Hill expressed his surprise at the revenue raised from the River Taxi and appreciation for the Breakfast Lions Club donation.

“What a nice gift to benefit the future graduates of San Marcos High School,” Hill said. “Who could believe all those trips made by the Breakfast Lions Club River Taxi could have such a dramatic impact for San Marcos.”
