SWT’s Warshauer honored for teaching

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Max Warshauer, professor of mathematics at Southwest Texas State University, has been named the state’s top college math teacher for 1999 by the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America.

Warshauer was presented the distinguished teaching award during the group’s annual meeting April 8-10 in San Marcos on the SWT campus.

Warshauer has been a member of the SWT math faculty since 1979. He has also taught courses in the SWT Honors Program, served as a volunteer coach for the American High School Math Exams at San Marcos public schools and chaperoned the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Science Festival in Seoul in 1998.

He received the SWT Math Department’s Teaching Award of Excellence in 1995, the university’s Everett Swinney Faculty Senate Excellence in Teaching Award in 1996 and was chosen to deliver the Presidential Seminar in 1984.

Warshauer established the highly acclaimed Honors Summer Math Camp and Junior Summer Math Camp at SWT. The camps, funded in part through grants from the National Science Foundation, are designed to excite young people about mathematics and increase the number of mathematicians from diverse backgrounds.

The MAA’s annual meeting brought more than 200 participants to SWT. The three-day conference consisted of presentations of papers by mathematicians and undergraduate students, business meetings and an invited address by MAA President Marcia Sward.
