Hispanic magazine donates archives to SWT
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Hispanic magazine has donated its archives to the Southwestern Writers Collection at Southwest Texas State University.
Hispanic donated the materials to the collection for preservation and research. Currently in its 12th year of publication, the magazine reaches a monthly readership of more than 1 million, placing it among the nation’s leading magazines. Hispanic focuses on business, politics and culture, running stories on all aspects of Latino life in the United States.
“The addition of the Hispanic archives represents a significant step forward for the Southwestern Writers Collection,” said curator Connie Todd. “We are well on our way to becoming a major resource for Mexican-American studies.”
The material donated consists of the editorial files from 1994 through 1998, including manuscripts, correspondence, memos, research, press kits and notes. The archives allow unparalleled access to the wide range of topics that Hispanic covers.
“If, for example, someone wanted to research Tejano superstar and SWT alum Emilio Navaira, the Hispanic archives are a tremendous resource,” said Todd. “There’s research on Emilio, other stories done on him, his press kit and drafts of the article. And that same sort of material illuminates a wide range of topics Hispanic has covered, from Mexico’s political situation to curanderismo (folk healing) in South Texas.”

The Southwestern Writers Collection is a major archival repository focusing on the literature, film and music of the Southwest. The collection is located adjacent to the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography at SWT. The collection is housed on the top floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday (until 8 p.m. on Tuesday), 1-5 p.m. Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday.
