Rodriguez named editor of state bilingual education journal

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Carlos Rodriguez, director of the bilingual education program at Southwest Texas State University, has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education.

A member of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) for over 30 years, Rodriguez assumed the duties of the non-salaried position in May. The first issue of the biannual publication to be published under his guidance is due at the end of the month.

“In 1997 the board of directors of TABE decided to give the publication more structure and voted to select an editor to serve a three-year term,” Rodriguez explained. “I thought I had enough knowledge and experience to apply to this activity and make it a professional publication, while meeting the goals of the organization to inform the public-at-large of bilingual education.”

After selecting a 15-member advisory/review board, composed of educators from all geographical regions of the state, Rodriguez appointed Kathy Fite and Nancy Ramos, both curriculum and instruction professors at SWT, as associate editors.

“We hope to expand our readership to beyond the 2,000-plus memberships to include school districts, higher education institutions, government entities and non-profit agencies to enlighten the public about bilingual education,” Rodriguez said.

An alumnus of SWT, Rodriguez earned degrees in education, journalism and educational administration. He received his doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas at Austin. He has been on the SWT faculty since 1971.

TABE , founded in 1972, is a state advocacy organization for the rights of language-minority children. The TABE network is composed of local school districts and university affiliated groups representing all major geographical regions of Texas. TABE members include parents, early childhood education personnel, elementary and secondary school teachers and administrators, college students, professors and university researchers. TABE is affiliated with the National Association for Bilingual Education.
