SWT welcomes freshman class
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Members of the 1998 freshman class at Southwest Texas State University will be officially welcomed to the university community during Freshman Convocation Aug. 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum on the SWT campus.
“The convocation will be the first official event of our centennial year,” said SWT President Jerome Supple, who will welcome the new SWTexans. “It will be the beginning of a year-long celebration of 100 years of dedication to academic excellence.”
The convocation will also open Welcome Week at SWT, which offers many activities to help acclimate new SWTexans. Residence halls will open Aug. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. for move-in.
Laurie Fluker, assistant professor of mass communication, will serve as emcee for the program, which will feature vignettes depicting SWT landmarks, the SWT family, freshman traditions and university traditions, between speakers.
Addressing the incoming freshmen will be Robert Gratz, vice president for academic affairs; Jon Bible, professor of finance and economics, representing the faculty; San Marcos Mayor Billy Moore; Anne-Marie Lausten, president of the Associated Student Government; and Liz Rosenblath, a 1982 graduate, representing SWT alumni.
The program will also feature performances by Groupo Folklorico de SWT and the Bobcat Marching Band.
A reception, sponsored by Oak Farms, the City of San Marcos, the SWT Alumni Association, Residence Life, the Centennial Campaign and the SWT University Bookstore, will follow the ceremony.
Other Welcome Week activities include an ice cream social on Augt. 23 at 6 p.m. in Sewell Park, followed at 8 p.m. by a volleyball tournament; a barbecue at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Sewell Park; the Roanoke Street Festival from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m on Aug. 25; and the LBJ Picninc for faculty, staff and guests on Aug. 28; among other activities. SWT President Jerome Supple will deliver his State of the University address at 9 a.m. on Aug. 25 in Evans Auditorium. Classes will begin Aug. 26.
