Josefina Lopez headlines 15th Annual Playwrights conference

Award-winning playwright Josefina Lopez will be this year's guest artist at the 15th annual Black and Latino Playwrights Conference September 4-10 at Texas State University.

A tribute to Lopez will be held at 7:30 p.m. September 8 in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The tribute is free and open to the public.

Lopez is best known for her play, Real Women Have Curves, which was later turned into an award-winning movie starring America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and Ingrid Oliu (Stand and Deliver). Lopez is also the founder of CASA 0101, a theatre serving Boyle Heights and dedicated to promoting Los Angeles artists.

Eugene Lee, artist-in-residence at Texas State and an alumnus with a 30-plus year career in the entertainment industry, founded the conference and serves as its artistic director. The mission of the conference is to celebrate the voices of Black and Latino playwrights by workshopping new plays in collaboration with professional directors, actors and university students.

The Ten-Minute Play Writing Workshop with Judy Tate will be 1-5 p.m. September 9 in Theatre Center room 210. Tickets to the workshop are $10 online or $15 at the door and may be purchased at txstatepresents.com.

The New Play Development Reading Presentation of Rubi X by Monica Sanchez will be 7:30 p.m. September 9 in the Recital Hall. The reading is free and open to the public.
