International Studies hosts inaugural Conference on Southeast Asia

The Center for International Studies at Texas State University will host the inaugural Conference on Southeast Asia April 21-22.

The conference, titled "Globalization in Southeast Asia: An Interdisciplinary Discussion on Opportunity, Understanding and Experiences," will take place 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. April 21 and 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. April 22 in room 3-5.1 of the LBJ Student Center on campus.

Texas State Provost Gene Bourgeois will give opening remarks 9 a.m. April 21 in room 3-14.1.

The conference will be a forum to inform, educate and converse on different issues affecting Southeast Asia. Conference events will include panel discussions, research presentations, career sessions and the screening of "The End/Beginning: Cambodia," an award-winning documentary written by Sophal Ear, associate professor of diplomacy and world affairs at Occidental College, Los Angeles.

During the conference, the Center for International Studies will also highlight Texas State's efforts and commitment to this unique region of the world, and will promote information about the Kenneth and Verena Wilson Fellowship Program that supports faculty and student exchanges between Texas State and various Non-Government Organizations, agencies and universities in Cambodia, most notably the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Furthermore, the Southeast Asia Conference will serve to further the university’s goal of internationalization.

The conference is sponsored by the Department of Political Science, Department of English, Center for Diversity and Gender Studies, Department of Psychology, Department of Sociology, College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate College.
