The H-E-B Tournament of Champions has made a donation to the Mathworks program at Texas State University in support of the 2014 Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camps (JSMC).

The Tournament of Champions is a charitable golf tournament hosted by the Texas-based grocery chain. This is the fourth year of funding provided by the Tournament of Champions, providing central Texas students opportunities to build a solid mathematical foundation while having fun learning in the summer.

The $15,000 contribution will provide program scholarships to more than 40 students participating in Mathworks' half-day JSMC program, held in partnership with San Marcos CISD. Students in the multi-level program start with the fundamentals of positive and negative numbers on a number line, then progress to more advanced topics when they return in following summers. This coming summer's program will be held at San Marcos High School.

For more than 26 years, H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust has contributed to worthy causes throughout Texas. H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust is a special fund that receives its money from an annual golf tournament sponsored by H-E-B’s vendor community. This golf tournament provides the funds for charitable projects and programs that have a positive impact on our communities within the areas of youth, children, education and health.

Access to high quality summer academic programs is crucial for young students. Research from the National Summer Learning Association shows that students who miss out on summer learning programs can end up as much as 6.5 educational years behind their peers by the end of 9th grade. Support from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions directly addresses this issue by giving access to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Additional support for the 2014 JSMC also comes from Texas State, San Marcos CISD, the KDK-Harman Foundation and the Kodosky Foundation.

The upcoming 2014 JSMC in San Marcos runs June 9-20, and includes breakfast, snack and lunch for students. Parents and students may register now for the 2014 JSMC at www.txstate.edu/mathworks.
