'Physical Inactivity Pandemic' topic of Brennan and Smith Lecture

Harold W. "Bill" Kohl will present "The Physical Inactivity Pandemic: An Urgent, Global Public Health Priority" during the spring Brennan and Smith Lecture April 4 for the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University.

The lecture will be held in room 4-16.1 of the LBJ Student Center on campus at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Kohl is a professor of epidemiology and disease control in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and the Department of Health and Kinesiology at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published numerous, influential studies on physical activity promotion. Previously he worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is a leader in national and international efforts to prevent disease and premature mortality through promotion of physical activity and exercise. He is the founding president of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health as well as co-editor of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology and was recently named to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Science Board.

About the Brennan and Smith Lecture

The Department of Annually the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State annually invites two distinguished scholars to deliver a Brennan and Smith Lecture. Speakers are internationally-known scientists and have been national academy members, presidential advisors and MacArthur Fellows. These lectures address current and important topics in athletic training, exercise and sports science, health education, physical education teacher education, recreation, and personal fitness and wellness education. Funding for this lecture series was generously provided by the estate of Molly Ann Brennan. Brennan-Smith was a 1949 physical education graduate of Texas State who was influential in her service to education and research in the Houston area and Texas State. She and her husband, Edgar Smith, have made several generous gifts to Texas State including this endowment.
