8th annual Celebration of the People Powwow aims to bridge cultures

The Native American Student Association will host its annual “Celebration of the People” powwow Nov. 14 at Texas State University-San Marcos.

The event, which promotes Native American culture, history and diversity, will run 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center amphitheatre. The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s powwow will include exhibition dancing, drumming, singing, flute playing, Native American arts and crafts and traditional foods. The southern drum Bull Creek, led by Nico Peña, will return for a performance this year as well.

Tribes represented at the powwow will include Kiowa, Lipan Apache, Comanche, Lakota, Dakota, Choctaw, Paiute, Northern Cherokee, Chickasaw, Potawatomi, Creek, Sans Arc, Caddo, Delaware, Zuni, Huron, Hawaiian and Aztec.

The powwow is sponsored by the Underrepresented Student Advisory Council, Multicultural Student Affairs, Multicultural Programming Committee, Student Organizations Council, Four Winds Intertribal Council Inc., Coca Cola and the Cornucopia Health Food Store.

The mission of the Native American Student Association is to increase and promote awareness of Native American and other indigenous cultures and histories.
