Texas State University-San Marcos Department of Theatre and Dance presents the Division of Dance’s annual Opening Door Dance Theatre Sept. 27-28 in Evans Auditorium.

Performances on both days will be 7:30-9 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission and $7 for students. Only cash will be accepted.

This year’s showcase will include six pieces choreographed by dance faculty and two choreographed by guest artists Bonnie Cox and Darla Johnson. An array of topics will be touched on in these performances, including the courage to face the unknown, the cyclical nature of psychological abuse and the increasing violence in Mexico.

“Each choreographer has a different way that they approach the choreography and different things that they want to say or produce feeling about,” said LeAnne Smith, professor of dance as well as co-founder and artistic director of the showcase. “Some of the choreography is very emotional, and some of it is very abstract. I think that the audience will go away with food for thought, and that’s what I appreciate about modern dance--it’s not cotton candy, it’s a full meal.”

Faculty choreographers of the showcase include Shay Ishii, Michelle Nance, LeAnne Smith, Anna Antoniewicz, Ana Baer Carillo and Kaysie Seitz Brown.
