The San Marcos community is invited to welcome the spring through song as the local young singers of the Hill Country Youth Chorus present their end of the year concert, “Glory to Gospel!” Monday, May 7.

Free and open to the public, the concert begins at 6:30 at the First Lutheran Church in San Marcos. “Local singers wanting to join the choir are encouraged to come hear our talented young men and women sing,” said Lynn Brinckmeyer, artistic director of the chorus and Texas State University School of Music faculty member.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring a sack or box of non-perishable food to donate to the Hays County Food Bank. Each spring the choir collects food for the food bank as a way to give back to the community.

“Founded in 2005, this professional children’s chorus featuring about 40 area children ages 7-16 exhibits the beauty of children’s voices with local youth from San Marcos and the surrounding communities in Hays County,” said Brinckmeyer.

The Texas State University School of Music hosts the chorus, which rehearses in the music building on Monday evenings throughout the academic year “These students continue to amaze me in their ability to sing with a tone and musical maturity beyond their years,” she said.

“The program serves boys and girls from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, with a curriculum that equips these young artists with the musical skills that enable them to seek the highest artistic standards in performances of challenging music,” Brinckmeyer added.

Throughout May, choir auditions will be held. Interested singers are encouraged to schedule an appointment to join the Hill Country Youth Chorus, now in its sixth season. “The choir has earned a growing regional reputation as an outstanding performance and educational model,” Brinckmeyer said.

The Hays County area has always strongly supported quality choral opportunities in San Marcos and surrounding communities. The Arts Resource Team, chaired by Dr. Bob Whalin, founded The Hill Country Youth Chorus in 2005 as a way to develop and support youth by providing quality choral opportunities.

“The Hill Country Youth Chorus provides youth with a choral music experience where successive levels of high artistic achievement and performance are fostered in participants. Since we offer scholarships for tuition and uniforms, all children who desire to sing in this type of choral ensemble have the opportunity available to them,” Brinckmeyer said, adding that the chorus is also intended to supplement and enhance the music training students receive in school.

Dr. Brinckmeyer also teaches courses in choral music education and directs the Texas State Women’s Choir. Brinckmeyer is assisted by Abigail Brown, executive assistant director; Corrie Box, artistic assistant director; and Danton Bankay, accompanist.
