The Texas State University-San Marcos School of Music will be well represented at the upcoming College Band Directors National Association conference in Seattle.

Both the Bobcat Marching Band and the Texas State Wind Ensemble have been selected for honors at the biennial event being held March 23-26 this year in Seattle at the University of Washington.

The Bobcat Marching Band, under the direction of Caroline Beatty, has been chosen to participate in the halftime video presentation during the conference. The band was selected for its 2010 halftime performance featuring music by the Beatles.

Five collegiate marching bands were chosen to present performance videos at the 2011 conference. Participants this year in addition to Texas State are the University of Arkansas, Auburn University, Clemson University and the University of Michigan.

To be selected for the conference presentation, band directors from colleges nationwide submit videos of halftime performance from one of the two previous seasons. The performances are ranked by a panel of judges based on several criteria.

This is the second time the Bobcat Marching Band has been chosen to present during the CBDNA halftime video presentation. The band, then under the direction of Rodney Schueller, was similarly honored in 2007.

The Texas State Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Schueller, has been chosen to perform a concert during the CBDNA conference. The ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. (Central) Thursday, March 24. The performance is currently scheduled to be webcast at http://banddirector.com/.

The performance will include selections from the works of Paul Creston, Eugene Goossens, Jonathan Newman and Scott McAllister.

The Texas State Wind Ensemble has been chosen to perform at two divisional conferences of the CBDNA in 1990 and 2008, but this is its initial performance at the national conference.

Other collegiate wind ensembles scheduled to perform include Ball State, Boise State, California State-Long Beach, Central Washington, the University of Miami and the University of Washington.

“We are very proud of the students in the bands at Texas State,” said Beatty. “They are terrific musicians and hard workers who utilize great teamwork to present performance that reflect the enthusiasm they have for their art.”

The CBDNA is a national organization of collegiate music faculty. Its members specialize in the development of new music and teaching, as well as performances in concert halls and athletic facilities.
