The award winning slam poet Gina Loring will perform at Texas State University on March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Alkek Library teaching theater.

In 2007, Loring made history by being the first American hip-hop artist to perform in Kuwait. Her performances inspired officials to invite her back the following year, where she spent ten days working with high school students.

She was top ranking female poet on Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam in 2002. Loring appeared on the show, which airs on HBO, for two seasons.

Loring has also been a part of BET’s Lyric Café, the Declare Yourself voting tour and recording artist P. Diddy’s Vote or Die campaign. She was recently featured as a singer and songwriter on the Brand New Heavies album, We Won't Stop.

This performance is part of a new campus series titled Women, Civic Responsibility, and Political Activism. The event is hosted by the Texas State Department of History, the Equity and Access Office, Multicultural Student Affairs, Multicultural Programming Committee, University College, Hip Hip Congress, CASO, and the Honors Program.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Greg Andrews at (512) 245-2142.
