University, city sponsor free piano recital

Texas State University-San Marcos and the Office of Economic Development of San Marcos present a piano recital featuring faculty artist Washington García on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall on campus.

The program will include Pasional by Enrique Espin Yépez, Ecuadorian Rhapsody No. 3 by Luis Humberto Salgado, Argentinean Dances by Alberto Ginastera, Scherzo in b flat minor and Nocturne in c sharp minor Op. Posthumous by Frederic Chopin and Wanderer Fantasy by Franz Schubert.

Born in Quito, Ecuador, Washington García began his musical studies at the age of six.  García holds a bachelor of music degree from the National Conservatory of Music in Ecuador, and master’s and doctoral degrees from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated at the age of 25 becoming the youngest Latin American to have received a doctoral degree in piano performance from the Johns Hopkins University.

Since his debut at the age of 15 with the Ecuadorian National Symphony Orchestra, García has been an active recitalist, soloist, and lecturer in prestigious venues in Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Canada, Israel, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and the United States. García’s performances and interviews have been broadcasted nationally and internationally by television and radio stations and he has also been featured in numerous press articles.  He has been recipient of several awards including a $25,000 career development grant given by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to two pianists representing thirty-three countries.

García served as a faculty member at the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University and was recently appointed assistant professor of piano at Texas State where he teaches applied piano.
