Date of Release: 09/15/2006

SAN MARCOS —The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University-San Marcos will play host to the Fourth Annual Texas State Black and Latino Playwrights Conference Sept. 22-24.

The three-day conference will showcase readings of two new plays in the Studio Theatre Center on campus. Admission is $3.

After an exhaustive nationwide submissions process, Artistic Director Eugene Lee and Associate Artistic Director Luis Munoz have selected Yo Frederick! by Gus Edwards and The Faraway Nearby by Amparo Garcia Crow as the two new scripts to workshop this year. The plays are rehearsed with the playwrights in residence, culminating in the staged readings. There will be a brief audience response session after each performance.

Yo Frederick! is a rap rendition of the early life of the impassioned African American abolitionist Frederick Douglas.

The Faraway Nearby illuminates the searing effects of the Vietnam War on three individuals.

Yo Frederick!, directed by Stephen Gerald, will be presented Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.

The Faraway Nearby, directed by Luis Munoz, will be presented Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
