“Art & Life” lecture brings Gee’s Bend artists to Texas State

SAN MARCOS —Traditional American art comes to Texas State University-San Marcos on Sept. 28 with the lecture “Art & Life: Celebrate the Quilters and Quilts of Gee’s Bend” presented by James Housefield at the J.C. Mitte art building room 2121 at 9:30 a.m.
The “Art & Life” lecture is the first campus event of Housefield’s programming as the University’s National Endowment for the Humanities Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities. Art aficionados will have the opportunity to learn about the intricate weaving of art and life in a palpable form: quilts. A quilting group from Gee’s Bend will present and discuss their quilts, which are currently on display at the Austin Museum of Art. This event also gives Texas State the chance to study African-American artists’ response to the tradition of the “found object” in modern art.
This event initiates three days of Gee’s Bend-related events in the Austin area. These events include “Artist Talk” at the AMOA on Sept. 29 and “Quilt Day” at the George Washington Carver Museum on Sept. 30. More information on these events is provided at www.AMOA.com.
