Wiley’s Way earns national honors

SAN MARCOS — Wiley’s Way, a children’s book written and illustrated by 12 high school participants in the Young Writers Program at the Katherine Anne Porter House in Kyle, has been selected by the American Association of University Presses for the 2005 Book, Jacket and Design Show, in the “Poetry and Fiction” category.
Wiley’s Way is one of six books recognized by the trade group as the best designed of 2004 in that category. Judging for the AAUP 2004 Book Jacket and Journal Show took place at the AAUP Office in New York City. There were approximately 295 book entries, 335 jacket and cover entries, three journal entries and five journal cover entries.
Wiley’s Way, a bilingual book written in English and Spanish and published in September by the University of Texas Press, tells the story of the eponymous crab that goes to college. Targeted at fourth- and fifth-graders, the book’s goal is to encourage young students to plan for college while teaching about such things as scholarships and the college application process. Author Tom Grimes, director of the KAP Young Writers Program and English professor at Texas State University-San Marcos, oversaw the project under the state’s “College for All Texans Campaign.”
